A Tribute to Gboyega Bawala

by
Gboyega Bawala, the great studio instructor and lecturer for Mass Communication Department, Caleb University, Imota Lagos.

‘Here’s to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through’

This song has been playing in my head since I was told you are gone.
You dropped off the bus of life, so tired you had withdrawn.
Now I am not trying to be a hypocrite or anything but man I miss you.
Heard you died and after all these tears all I got left is a tissue.
I know this pain is just for a while, but while it lasts I will pour out my mind, now let us have a conversation, break down this issue.

‘Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And memories bring back, memories bring back you’

Now lets rewind man,
I remember the first time we had a conversation?
I came to class, which I hated doing, but I did anyways, to meet this person that was assigned as a new lecturer, terrible with syllables, but full of determination.
You introduced yourself and automatically got a nickname.
It didn’t take time before you rose to fame, and we loved the man you became.

Gboyega Bawala

I remember laughing so hard as my best friends and I made a joke about you on our walk back to the hostel.
I remember classes where you formed serious just so we all can take you seriously, if others didn’t notice, I could tell. But little did you know that the love we had for you can make another jealous.

Asides standing by us through tough times in acquiring knowledge, you were our first-hand man in alerting us before we got in trouble.
The memories are rushing now, the names you found hard to pronounce, with every correction came a new name for the bearer
Be it Precious, Audrey, Oluchi, Syntyche, Eghosa, you just couldn’t place the syllables right.
Its either a Yoruba name or you spill out the wrong words. lol

I really wanted this rumour to be all false, but you are dead so I heard.
I still never understood how you would scold us and laugh a second after.
I swear your death is like jumping into the ocean when you can’t swim, such a disaster.

Unless you don’t want to know anything about cameras or you just want to be a retard.
This man tried his best in letting us know the basics of everything, dear studio manager, best lecturer.

Gboyega

I have seen fire and rain, sunny days that I thought would always end in pain
I have seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, and I always thought I will see you again

Now its hours since your body went flat and even memories of that are all gravel and glass
But one lesson I will never forget is to enjoy life while it last.

Leave a legacy of good, amongst every soul you meet be they good or bad.

Till we meet again old friend, till then a minute silence for the hurts that comes with this card.

Rest on Gboyega Bawala.

This is the most saddening news I’ve heard all year. Mr Gboye! 😭😭😭. I can’t believe you’re no more. You pushed me to the Cinematography career with your thorough repetitive teachings on the camera. I’ll never forget how you allowed me, Ellouis and Moyo run a radio show secretly, although not broadcasted. You’ll be greatly missed. Thank you for touching lives and teaching us to do so. Rest on Mr Gboye

“Yomi” as you always called me. When I heard of your demise earlier today I thought it was a joke, I still think it’s just a prank and I would see you when school resumes post corona. Mr Gboye you were not just a lecturer and studio instructor to me during my time in Caleb, you were a father, friend and an elder brother to me. I can recall how you would call me to the Tv studio “your office” and ask about my grades “Yomi ma shey ese gbagbe ke school lo wa oo” “Yomi don’t get carried away with work and forget that you are in school”. Those were your words to me. Mr Gboye you were a loved by students which was evident in your life sir. You would always say that ” Yomi I trust and that Life is beyond Caleb” now I understand sir. It is well Mr Gobye keep resting in peace Sir .- Abayomi Agbomire Mass Comm 2016, PRO Caleb Alumni, MD/CEO Perfect Media

He always had an encouraging word, always willing to share . I will say the impact he made in those studio sessions were Gold. I felt like a pro when I stepped into the outer world and saw all he taught us was valuable.

I am glad he made impacts and we can remember him for good.

Rest In Peace Mr Gboyega 🙏🏾
